The Otoe County Attorney is an official elected to a four-year term of office. The County Attorney is counsel for the county and its elected officials. The County Attorney oversees the investigation and criminal prosecution of all felony and misdemeanor crimes and infractions occurring within Otoe County, sometimes working in conjunction with or referring cases to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office or the United States Attorney’s Office.
The County Attorney’s Office also represents Otoe County in civil lawsuits; initiates and processes juvenile court proceedings (abuse/neglect, termination of parental rights, juvenile law violations); oversees the Juvenile Diversion Program; files and processes involuntary mental health commitments when someone is mentally ill and dangerous to him/herself or others; reviews and approves inheritance tax worksheets; and initiates and handles tax foreclosures for the County. The County Attorney and Deputy also serve as Ex-Officio County Coroners, responding to death scenes that are outside of the hospital and without medical care to consider the necessity of an autopsy for determining cause of death.
